Attic Insulation
Project Overview
A residential homeowner in Ottawa contacted HCGEOT after an attic assessment identified that the existing insulation level was well below current energy efficiency recommendations. The existing insulation was in acceptable condition and did not require removal — HCGEOT completed a straightforward blown-in insulation top-up over the existing layer, bringing the attic to approximately R-60. Ventilation baffles were verified and installed where required to maintain proper soffit and eave ventilation before insulation was blown in. Depth rulers were placed throughout the attic prior to installation to allow accurate verification of the finished depth across all zones, including restricted areas near the eaves.
Project Challenges
Ensuring even distribution of blown-in insulation across the full attic footprint was the primary focus — including areas with restricted access near the eaves and soffit zones. Ventilation baffles were checked and installed where required before blowing commenced to ensure soffit ventilation was not blocked by the new insulation layer. Depth rulers placed at multiple points across the attic allowed accurate confirmation of the finished R-60 depth at completion.
Scope of Work
- Pre-job attic assessment and measurement of existing insulation levels
- Assessment of attic ventilation conditions
- Installation and verification of ventilation baffles at soffit and eave bays where required
- Installation of depth rulers throughout attic for coverage verification
- Blown-in insulation installed over existing insulation to approximately R-60 across full attic footprint
- Uniform distribution of insulation including restricted eave areas
- Verification of finished depth at all ruler locations
- Final inspection and site cleanup

Results
The attic was brought to approximately R-60 using blown-in insulation installed over the existing layer. Depth rulers confirmed consistent coverage across the full attic footprint, including areas near the eaves. Proper soffit ventilation was maintained throughout. The Ottawa home now meets current energy efficiency recommendations, reducing heat loss through the attic and improving year-round comfort.
