Attic Insulation
Project Overview
A residential homeowner in Ottawa contacted HCGEOT after identifying that their attic insulation was well below current energy code requirements. The existing insulation level was assessed on-site and found to be insufficient for optimal thermal performance. HCGEOT completed a straightforward blown-in cellulose top-up, bringing the attic to a full R-50 as requested by the customer. Depth rulers were installed throughout the attic prior to blowing to ensure consistent coverage and accurate depth verification at completion.
Project Challenges
The primary challenge on this project was ensuring even distribution of blown-in cellulose across the full attic footprint, including areas with restricted access near the eaves. Depth rulers were placed at multiple points to allow accurate verification of the finished R-50 depth across all zones.
Scope of Work
- Pre-job attic assessment and measurement of existing insulation levels
- Installation of depth rulers throughout attic for coverage verification
- Blown-in cellulose insulation top-up to R-50 across full attic footprint
- Verification of finished depth at all ruler locations
- Site cleanup and final inspection

Results
Attic insulation was successfully brought to R-50 using blown-in cellulose. Depth rulers confirmed consistent coverage across the full attic. The homeowner's attic now meets current energy efficiency standards, reducing heat loss and improving year-round comfort.
